Takehiko Inoue interprets Gaudi’s Universe

Thu, May 7th 2015, 11:54:36

I think there is no one who loves manga that doesn’t know who is Takehiko Inoue. If the name doesn’t sound familiar to you, definitely the basketball manga “Slam Dunk” and samurai “Vagabond” manga fictionalizing the life of Miyamoto Musashi, and “Real” that deals with wheelchair basketball, does.

Takehiko Inoue is a world famous mangaka from Kyushu, whose first big debut manga “Slam Dunk” place him in the top of the manga world. But Takehiko Inoue is not a conventional mangaka.

His first visit to Barcelona in 1992 to view the Dream Team Match made a great impression on him. Gaudi’s masterpiece “Sagrada Familia” was something Takehiko Inoue couldn’t forget, even though at the beginning he thought it was something “eccentric” and “disconcerting”, but he couldn’t stop thinking about Gaudi’s unfinished church. That’s why in 2011, Takehiko Inoue came back to Barcelona after studying for some years Gaudi’s work. Takehiko Inoue spend some time in Barcelona and visiting Gaudi’s childhood places, to understand completely the work of the catalan genius. The result of that visit was a sketch-travel workbook of Takehiko Inoue called “Pepita” the name of the only known woman that Gaudi ever loved.

But not everything finishes with Pepita’s book. A exhibition is taking place in Japan while I’m writing and you reading! The exhibition called “Takehiko Inoue interprets Gaudi’s Universe” combines the real Gaudi’s Universe showing some drawings, furniture, models and materials done by Gaudi and other contemporaries from the catalan Modernism Art, and the other part is the fictional universe of Gaudi, interpreted by Takehiko Inoue through original drawings.

In the exhibition there is japanese and english audio guide to not miss any detail!! The exhibition is taking place now in Kobe Hyogo Prefactural Museum of Art and will be there since May 24th, after that the exhibition will travel to Sendai Mediatheque and will be there from 3th June to 12th of July.
