Originally from northern Japan, Kokeshi dolls hail from Tohoku, a region renowned for its hot spring resorts. In the 19th century, local woodworkers, skilled in crafting bowls and trays, began creating these simple dolls as souvenirs for visitors. While their exact meaning remains unclear, the dolls are often made from Mizuki, or "water wood," which some believe serves as a charm against fire.

After the wood is seasoned for months, artisans use a lathe to shape and refine it into a doll. The head and body are crafted separately and then joined. The craftsman completes the doll by painting its face and kimono.
Today, while traditional Kokeshi dolls continue to be made, modern variations with creative designs have emerged. These feature stylized bodies, hair, and vibrant kimonos, crafted mostly in Gunma prefecture by individual artists.

Traditional Kokeshi dolls, with their round heads and cylindrical bodies, are crafted exclusively in Tohoku. Their distinct kimono patterns have been passed down through generations of artisans.
A treasured part of Japan's artistic heritage, Kokeshi dolls are now available in our special auction list. Start your collection with J-Subculture today!
