Japan boasts a rich variety of traditional dolls, including Daruma, Teru Teru Bozu, Hina dolls, and more. Today, let's explore Kokeshi dolls! With a history of around 150 years, Kokeshi dolls originated in the Edo Period, crafted by skilled artisans in multiple designs. Unlike other dolls, they have a more human-like appearance and were first made as wooden, cylindrical toys in Japan's Touhoku Region, resembling people, especially young girls. Now recognized as traditional crafts, they are popular souvenirs for visitors to Japan.
Traditionally, there are ten types of Kokeshi dolls:
Hijori
Kijiyama
Nambu
Naruko
Sakunami
Tougatta
Tsuchiyu
Tsugaru/Nuruyu
Yajirou
Zaou Takayu
The style of Kokeshi dolls varies by the region they were crafted in, and the wood used changes the color of the dolls' features. Recently, 新型こけし (shingatakokeshi) or "creative" Kokeshi are emerging, featuring innovative shapes and famous characters. See if you can recognize any in the picture below:
Kokeshi dolls often grace homes, adding a touch of Japanese elegance to any decor. With so many available, I'm tempted to start my own collection. You can find these charming dolls up for auction on J-Subculture Japan Auction—happy bidding!
